Beware of Ravindra

One of my favorite Microsoft folk has *finally* joined the blogging ranks. Trish Lacey is a Senior Marketing Manager in the Developer Marketing group at Microsoft and, get this, she has a level 41 Night Elf Warrior on World of Warcraft! Apparently Trish ran into Jeff Julian at TechEd and Jeff pushed her into the GeeksWithBlogs ranks.Bravo, Jeff!

If your hanging out on the Darkwood server on WoW and you happen to run into a tough-ass Night Elf chick named Ravindra, ask her to dance for ya!

Oh yeah… if you happen to run into a measly level 17 Night Elf Druid named Fidalgo, that’s me.

Welcome to 2.0

Well…the conversion is finally complete. After running on .Text v0.95 since Nov. 2003 (!), I have finally upgrading my blogging software to Community Server 2.0. It wasn’t trivial by any means to get me from .Text v0.95 to Community Server 2.0. First off, there’s no conversion tool to take you from .Text to CS2.0. There is, however, one to take you from .Text to Community Server 1.1 and then there are some scripts found in the install packageto take you from CS1.1 to CS2.0. Therefore, I had to convert all of my .Text content to CS1.1 first, then I had to apply the update from CS1.1 to CS2.0. Then…after all that was said and done, I had to figure out how to get Community Server 2.0 from a great community site portal with Forums and Galleries and User Blogs, etc. dumbed down to just a single blog tool. After fuddling around in some configuration files, I’m finally up and running.

So far, so good. Community Server is certainly a clean environment to move around in. Plus, there’s a *ton* more features available than what was in .Text. That’s obvious when the blogging component of Community Server is a maturation of the old .Text engine. The only complaint I have is I think it’s too much for what I need.I just need a simple blogging engine, however, having the complexity of all of these other great features is just getting in the way of what I need.I’ll put it to the test and see how it works out now that I’m over the upgrade/installation hurdle. The only way to test something out to it’s fullest is to actually use it. Which means I need to start blogging more.

BillG to step away from Microsoft

June 15th, 2006

I received an email from SteveB at 3:10PM with an announcement for “company news” to come at 3:30PM. “Uh oh!”, I thought, “that can’t be good“. What could it be? Was Vista slipping? Was Steve leaving? Was Bill leaving?

As it turns out, Bill announced that he will be stepping away from his full time duties at Microsoft in July 2008. He will focus his efforts to the Bill& Melinda Gates Foundation. Bill said that he will still stay on at Microsoft on a part-time basis and as Chairman – “this is not a retirement, but a reordering of my priorities”. Ray Ozzie will immediately take on Bill’s current role of Chief Software Architect.

Just as I join Microsoft, my luminary, BillG decides to step down. It had to happen eventually. At least it’s not happening for another 2 years. I hope in that time that I get a chance to meet the man and tell him and he impacted my life. He brought my technical passion to the forefront of my life – and I thankyou for that. I couldn’t imagine doing anything else.

More news and blog buzz to follow…I’m sure.

Update: 4:40PM CST … Just received an email from Bill about his plans.Funny… he’s still in the press conference answering questions. He must have a great mobile device and fast thumbs! :)
