Speaking at VSLive! San Francisco – Feb. 23 – 27

January 30th, 2009 No comments

VSLive! San Francisco I will be speaking at the upcoming VSLive conference in San Francisco on Feb. 23-27 and I invite you to join me.

As a reader of this blog, I’m able to offer you a registration discount that will save you $500 off of the registration cost ($1395 vs. $1895) for the VSLive! Plus package. Just use the promo code NS9F03 when you register at http://vslive.com/2009/sf/register.aspx.

I will be presenting two sessions:

If you’re interested, I’d be more than happy to share the work we’re doing around Project MEBA and the Azure Services Platform as well.

This event also coincides with the last of the MSDN Developer Conferences where you can get the Best of PDC. Attendees of VSLive receive free admission into the MSDN Developers Conference.

I have a long history with the VSLive conferences. Before VSLive, we had VBITS (Visual Basic Insiders Technical Summit). The very first professional conference I attended was VBITS ‘95 in Orlando, FL. After this, I was hooked on the developer conference experience. Whether its VBITS, VSLive, TechEd, PDC, MIX, etc., I always come away from these events more excited than ever to be a developer. I get a “developer high” and I can wait to tackle what I’ve learned from each of these conferences. Even as a speaker, I come away from these learning so much more.

I hope to see you in San Francisco!

MSDN Unleashed Fall ‘08 Recap with a Little St. Louis Code Camp Thrown In

January 14th, 2009 No comments

Ok… I failed. I’ve been sitting on this post for some time now. But you know how it goes. You get busy… the holidays… vacation with the mouse…yada-yada-yada. Anyhow… I promised the attendees of the recent MSDN Unleashed events along with the gracious group of developers at the St. Louis Code Camp a copy of my slides from my presentations at the aforementioned events.

First… let’s point you to the slides presented at the Fall ‘08 series of MSDN Unleashed events. MSDN Unleashed is a series of events that the Microsoft Evangelist present across the country to keep you – the developer audience – up to snuff on what’s going on in the world of development around the Microsoft Platform.

I presented an overview of Silverlight 2 at both MSDN Unleashed and the St. Louis Code Camp, therefore, I’ll only link to it once here…

St. Louis Code Camp

The St. Louis Code Camp was great! I’d like to thank Scott Spradlin and all of the organizers for inviting me to participate in a great event. I’d also like to think Brian Moore for letting me crash at Chateau Moore. I look forward to participating at future events in and around St. Louis.

At the St. Louis Code Camp, I presented an overview on Azure and the Azure Services Platform. I also filled in for a speaker who had to unfortunately back out at the last minute and presented an overview of Silverlight 2 (see slides above).

The St. Louis developer community came out strong and I thank them for their hospitality. On to the slides…

Once again… my apologies for the tardiness of posting these slides. But if you haven’t figured it out by now, you can find all of my presentations up on SlideShare. You may also understand my tardiness once you read some upcoming news I have for you (my poor attempt at a teaser). Stay tuned!

Chippewa Valley Code Camp Recap, Azure Development Resources

November 8th, 2008 2 comments

I’d like to thank everyone who came out to the Chippewa Valley Code Camp. It was certainly a cold and blustery November day, and a perfect day to sit inside and get your geek on.

For those of you that attended my “A Lap Around Windows Azure” session, here are the resources I mentioned for you to get up and running with your first Azure service:

First, Download the SDK’s:

Those two SDK’s will get you up and running with Windows Azure. If you want to take advantage of some of the complex work we’ve already done and take your cloud development to the next level, grab the following .NET Services and SQL Data Services SDK:

Next, Register for the Azure services to get your development token for the Azure service runtime environment, the .NET Services and SQL Data Services. My understanding is Live Services will be available shortly.

Also, check out the following learning resources, starting with the following sessions from the Microsoft PDC conference:

As well as Steve Marx’s short vignettes to get you up and developing on Windows Azure:

Finally, download and install the Azure Services Training Kit which contains a number of samples, demos and hands-on labs.

I hope this provides the necessary resources for you to learn about Windows Azure and the Azure Services Platform, but more importantly provides you the necessary training to get you developing for the cloud. Good luck!

Indy TechFest ‘08 Wrap-up

October 6th, 2008 No comments

indytechfest I would like to commend the organizers of the Indy TechFest ‘08 for putting on one of the best community run conferences I’ve ever been a part of. With over 450 in attendance and a day full of great technical content and great speakers. Very impressive all around. Stand up job, gentlemen! I’d also like to thank the attendees who came up to introduce themselves and those of you who attended my sessions.

My first session on A Tour and Discussion of CodePlex came awfully early in the  morning when Dan Rigsby dragged myself, Brian Gorbett and our new friends from Findlay, Ohio out for a night of pre-techfest festivities. As a side note, if you feel your ego is getting to bloated, just go to a bar where you are the oldest one there! Ugh. Here are a few links from the session…

In my WPF session, WPF, WTF? No…WPF! It’s all about XAML these days, we had an amazing turnout – standing room only! There can only be a few explanations as to why… A.) the room only had 10 chairs available, B.) all of the other sessions at the time were canceled, or C.) there is a LOT of interest in building WPF applications. I hope it’s the latter! As with all my WPF sessions I’ve presented in the past, there was just WAY to much content to fit in a short amount of time. I need to either take this session and ask for two time slots to cover it, or just pair down the session to fit it into the standard 60-75 minute time slots. There is just SO much to talk about, it would be hard to pair it down. Here are the resources from the session…
